Understanding how to recognize and evaluate market opportunities is crucial in this new environment. An engineer’s entrepreneurial abilities and business oriented actions has a better chance to move innovations from research into manufacturing and onto this dynamic marketplace.
This workshop will introduce Entrepreneurs who started out as engineers and share their stories and experiences of how they moved their ideas and built their companies to take their products to market.
You will learn:
· What business skills you need to become an Entrepreneur,
· How to build your business from idea to a company,
· How to seek funding,
· How to accept the risks and be courageous to become a leader,
· Insights to “lessons learned” … how to avoid making common mistakes, and
· How to keep your dream alive
A working panel of Entrepreneurs led by a moderator will lead an introduction of each representing Entrepreneur with a Question and Answer session open to the Audience.
Moderator:
Sara Rauchwerger, BG Strategy
Ms. Rauchwerger is the founder and Managing Director of BG Strategy, a global market entry services company specializing in helping clients enter global markets. Sara brings over 20 years of Business Development and Business Strategy experience from both private enterprises and government contracts from various companies in the fields of Telecommunication, Aerospace, and Information Technology. Mr. Rauchwerger has been instrumental in successfully aiding small and medium size companies expand their products and services from a domestic business environment to a global environment particularly into China. Sara an engineer by trait with an international business background worked in Europe, North America and within the Chinese community in China. Her hands-on experience as an entrepreneur managing a global company enables her to understand the dynamics of a business environment from a personal perspective. Sara holds a Masters Degree in International Business from the Grenoble Graduate School of Business, France and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from San Jose State University, California.
David DuPouy, co-founder and CEO, MetaPass, Inc.
David DuPouy is the CEO of MetaPass, Inc., a network security software company he co-founded in 2003. Previously, while a graduate student in France he developed handwriting recognition software and came to Silicon Valley on his own at age 21 with no money, no visa, and no connections. He immediately licensed his product to a few companies and founded Sensiva, Inc. In 6 years he opened offices and created jobs in the US, Asia, and Europe, sold over 2 million copies, and received numerous awards worldwide. Currently David stays involved with Sensiva as its Chairman. He is a board member of two other startups in the areas of remote access and customer relationship management (CRM). He double-majored in Electric Engineering and Computer Science. He holds a U.S. Patent and is a speaker at Stanford University in the fields of business, engineering, and education.
Yvonne Li, founder and CEO, ADurance, Inc.
Yvonne Li founded ADurance, Inc. in January of 2004, a software company that addresses the emerging digital signage market. Ms. Li has 20 years of experience in the high tech industry including sales & marketing, R&D and product development. Prior to founding ADurance,
she served as the Director of Sales for Silicon Optix Inc., a semiconductor fabless company, managing the sales channels in the US and Asia for various products. Prior to joining SOI, Ms. Li was the International Sales Director for VARS Inc., manufacturer of a large-scale video storage and networking systems for semiconductor fabs. VARS was acquired by KLA-Tencor in 1998 where Ms. Li helped in the transition of the business to KLA-Tencor and served as Sales Manager for the next two years. Other work experience includes Research Engineer for Lockheed Engineering and Science Company, contracted by NASA. During this period, she published 5 technical papers in the fields of video signal processing and image processing. All papers were submitted to NASA Johnson Space Center Document Library. Ms. Li received her Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering (1985) with additional course works in Computer Science from University of Houston.
Roy Feague, founder and CEO, Satori Labs, Inc.
Roy Feague, founder and CEO of Satori Labs, has nearly twenty years of experience in the high-tech industry in roles ranging from software development through executive management. Before founding Satori Labs in 2002, Roy spent seven years with industry luminary Philippe Kahn at Starfish, leading development teams on successful commercial projects such as Sidekick, TrueSync, and the groundbreaking REX and REX PRO PDAs. Roy founded Satori Labs to realize his vision for an entirely new class of transparent computing tools. He is currently an inventor on four patents, and two patents pending.
Ted Tsao, Founder & CEO, STT WebOS, Inc.
Ted Tsao founded STT WebOS, Inc. in 2002, delivering disruptive technology for next generation web-computing. STT's unique multi-purpose web appliance enhances IT operations and reduces costs. Ted's 18 years of industrial experience range from startups such as 3Ware, Photomatrix, and nCube to industrial leaders such as Control Data, Siemens, Unisys, HP, Quantum/Maxtor. Ted holds an MS in computer science from Cal Poly, Pomona and BS in computer science from California State University, Los Angeles.
Henry Wong, Founder & Managing Director, Diamond Tech Ventures LLP
Wong has resided in China & Silicon Valley for the last 25 years. From being a Serial Entrepreneur to a Venture Capitalist, Wong is in a unique position where he can fully utilize his operational experience, investment talent and his Chinese heritage to help and build companies with a global vision.
In his prior Fund, Crystal Ventures, Wong was active with portfolio companies including SMIC, LGC Wireless, Infinera, and Exavio. A seasoned investor and entrepreneur, Wong has succeeded as the founder, chairman & CEO of SS8 Networks Inc., IP Communications, XaQti Semiconductor, CNet Technology Inc., and Combinet (ISDN Systems). His success, experience and leadership are invaluable in his role as an Investor, Serial Entrepreneur and mentor in Silicon Valley.
In 2002, Wong was the finalist to receive the “Entrepreneur of the Year Award”. Mr. Wong received a B.Sc. degree in Business from University of Utah and a MBA in Telecom Management from Golden Gate University.
